Golf & Stories

Stories Behind the Game

Every club has a history. Every golfer has a story: first round, favourite hole, memorable victory. A friendship that began on the course. A family tradition passed from one generation to the next.

Golf Australia’s research highlights the strong social connections, friendships, sense of belonging and shared experiences that develop through golf clubs. (Golf Australia Archive)

Golf & Stories transforms these personal memories into artworks, creating a collection of stories that celebrates individual golfing journeys while building a visual record of the club’s history.

1. Vision

Golf & Stories gives an opportunity to capture the stories behind the game and draw a creative portrait of the people, memories and experiences that make a golf club a community.

What stories are hidden behind the scorecard?

2. Why it matters

A golf club is shaped not only by its course and traditions, but by the people who have played there, made friendships, celebrated achievements and shared experiences over the years.

When these stories are collected and creatively interpreted, they become part of the club’s living history — connecting generations of members and giving the community a stronger sense of identity and belonging. Golf Australia research identifies this sense of community and belonging as an important part of the golf club experience. (Golf Australia Archive)

3. Program objectives

Golf & Stories aims to:

  • encourage members to reflect on their personal golf experiences;
  • create opportunities for members to share stories and memories;
  • explore the relationship between personal and club identity;
  • transform memories into artworks;
  • create a visual collection that celebrates the members and history of the club.

4. Who it is for

Developed for golf club members of all ages and artistic experience.

Golf & Stories can bring together life members, newer golfers, different generations, men and women, juniors, friends and family members by creating opportunities to discover stories that might otherwise remain unspoken.

5. Program structure

Golf & Stories can be delivered as a single creative event, a short series or a longer storytelling and art project, tailored to the club’s history, membership and interests.

Examples of tailored program formats are available on request.

Possible activities include:

My Golf Story — members transform a memorable golfing experience into a drawing, painting, collage or mixed-media artwork.

The Hole I Remember — a favourite hole becomes the starting point for a visual story about a particular place, moment or experience. Or maybe you have had a hole in one?

People of the Club — creative portraits inspired by the members, friends, mentors and pros who have shaped the club community.

Generations in Golf — exploring family connections, traditions and stories passed between generations of golfers.

Our Club, Our Stories — members contribute individual memories that together form a collective creative portrait of the club.

The Golf Archive — artworks and stories are brought together to create a lasting visual record for the club archive or special exhibition or event.

7. Partnership opportunities

Art Connecting Communities can work with a golf club to identify meaningful stories, develop creative themes and facilitate the transformation of personal memories into artworks.

Golf & Stories project can be connected to a club anniversary, milestone, special event, member celebration or ongoing club archive.

Every club has its official history.

But there is another history — the stories remembered by the people who have been part of it.

Golf & Stories gives those memories a creative form and brings them together telling the story of your club through the people who shape it.

8. Bring Golf & Stories to your club

Ready to bring art to your club?

Every golf club has its own character, traditions and community.

Golf & Stories can be designed to reflect yours.

Let’s create a program that brings your members together, gives them something new to experience and makes the clubhouse a place for creativity as well as golf.
